On the Right Track

I hope you’ve had a great day so far. Maybe the weather cooperated perfectly. Or it’s been especially productive. Or you’ve only encountered reasonable people. If life was a playlist, would you put today on Repeat? Or delete it entirely?
Now, consider stories. Are there some you’d pursue more than once? I have a list of 50+ films that I’d happily watch annually. (But I don’t, because that leaves too little time to write. Sigh.)

Fiction is often categorized as being either plot driven or character driven. Both kinds entertain me.  I’ve watched an entire less-than-stellar movie (and if I’m honest, a series or two as well), just because I’m curious about how it’s going to end. Especially mysteries and crime dramas. Did I recognize the clues? Was I right about whodunit? Yet, as satisfying as it is when my intuition was right, I LOVE a twist that I never saw coming.

Other stories are delightful because the cast amuses or intrigues me. In my historical novel, I had a blast fleshing out a minor character. Historical records only provide his name and occupation, leaving me the freedom to fill in the gaps. So, I made him snarky on the inside, but secretly heroic. He’s rail-thin, but gives everyone food nicknames. I’d read anything about this quirky dude, just to see what he’s up to next. It would be amazing to meet him in person. At least, the version of him that I created. (If only we could re-write certain people, LOL.) How about you? Got a favorite character, animated or otherwise? I’ve always liked Sherlock Holmes, or anything with Sean Connery. Or Minions.

I like to compare stories to a train ride. Think of the cast and their personalities as the journey. Watching well-written characters leaves me wanting more. Even when their actions lack credibility, it’s still a pleasure to spend that time in their fictional presence.
Or maybe the cast doesn’t thrill you, but the plot is utterly captivating. It keeps you eager to see what happens next. Think of those events as the destination. You find yourself thinking, “I LIKE where this is headed.”

When the characters and plot are equally brilliant, it’s utterly magical! Think of your favorite destination. Even though you know every bend in the road, would that familiarity keep you from experiencing whatever drew you there in the first place? Didn’t think so. When I enjoy somewhere, the anticipation builds, the closer I get.

I’ve heard writing experts insist that ALL fiction is plot driven. I’ve heard just as many contend that no, it’s character driven. Does it really matter? Some of us prefer the texture and flavor of a cake’s layers, while others would be happy with just a bowl of frosting and a spoon. Don’t overthink it. Dig in and enjoy!!!

Ciao for now,

At the end of the day, I want my readers to enjoy reading this series as much as I've enjoyed writing it.

I'm glad you decided to come for the quest.
I'd be thrilled if you stayed for the journey
