I’m Kai, a Canadian author preparing to launch my debut fantasy novel.
You won’t find these pages packed with dwarves, orcs or dragons (Sorry, As a Canadian author, I feel obligated to apologize, LOL). But you’ll enjoy my debut novel if you long for immersive fantasy worlds, reluctant heroes, strong emotional journeys, humor, danger, and stories that inspire your inner hero.
I was raised in a four-generation household of voracious, intellectual readers with faultless grammar, and surrounded by books of every description, from classics to comics. Books were my constant companions. I want my own stories to entertain, but also to touch you at a deeper place you maybe weren’t expecting.
I seek to provide my readers with an escape into a world that delights, intrigues and satisfies them. I want to immerse them in the emotional journeys of characters they can identify with at some level.
My heroes are often reluctant, and believe they have nothing to offer. Most of us sing that song to ourselves, don’t we? I want my stories to inspire your inner hero. I like to take an unsuspecting character, slip a burr of truth down their shirt, then watch them exchange their tatters of defeat for the armor of their true identity.
The ocean, road trips, and the call of distant horizons.
A lifelong love of animals and the bonds that shape us.
The way music heals, connects, and lingers.
A deep belief in justice, restoration, and second chances.
Beauty that comforts broken people and gives them purpose.
Connection, trust, and the family we choose.
After working on this series in my spare time for the last twenty years, I found a professional editor to work with. The process has been as illuminating as ****.
My mind thinks in metaphors, so try this one on. What if, instead of writing a book, I’d spent all these years building a house? Every week, I’d cut a few more boards and hammer in a few more nails. Fast forward to the present day. As I looked over what I’d built, it had the requisite walls, floors and ceilings. But was it up to code?
Enter the architect with his blueprints, aka my developmental editor.
I had a lot of the right fictional elements, but not always in the right places or proportions. I’ve learned so much in the past year! For a long time, I was hard on myself for not finishing the first book years ago. Good thing I didn’t, because the final version is so much better. Like wine and whiskey, the aging process is well worth it!
Whimsy, humor, beauty, and the people who make life worth living.
Action, death, darkness, and villains with perfectly logical reasons.
Reluctant heroes, emotional healing, found family, and the courage to become more than we believed possible.
